5G and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo

LINES 1

This year the Olympic Games are filled with technological innovations.  PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics was the first event Intel and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) cooperated and brought 5G and new technology to the Games.

Some of these include:

  • Samsung SmartSuits with sensors for live feedback on body position data to coaches
  • Giro Avance MIP, the Multi-directional Impact Protection helmets
  • Sensored vests with airbags for MotoGP riders
  • Smooth Virtual Reality live stream with 5G

The IOC has an infrastructure plan in terms of how it delivers a sustainable legacy for the hosts. […] Connectivity is important to the 2020 Olympics and we are committed to making Tokyo 2020 the most connected games in history” explains Rick Echevarria, GM of Intel’s Olympics partnership.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics is creating an innovative environment for the Games, which was postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions. From 207 countries in 33 sports there will be 11,000 athletes competing in technologically highly equipped venues.

5G has a big role in innovating sports spectating, benefiting its advantages The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games alongside Intel Co. NTT and NTT DOCOMO, Inc., cooperated to put 5G in work for a sensational experience.

AR at swimming venue

Fans watching the swimming competitions will be geared with AR devices providing live details and information during events with the help of 5G’s high-speed large-capacity technology. To be provided with information in real time fans can really sense the gripping adrenaline.

Multi-live broadcast at golf venue

Golf is one of the few sports that you can actually become better from watching. Some like to watch from a fixed spot, some like to follow along with their favourite player. To meet these needs, the organizers provide rental devices and with 5G’s low-latency virtue fans can individually select and watch live videos of the action at multiple locations.

Ultra-realistic 12k footage at sailing venue

In case someone still feels the urge to bring binoculars to the sailing venue, instead of sailing boats they might only find pixels. Jokes aside, for fans at the Tokyo 2020 Games the spectators will have the sensation of being directly next to the racers. To achieve this, there is a 50m screen floating on the Enoshima Yacht Harbour water broadcasting 12k resolution video through drone footage using 5G network. A similar footage will be live in Tokyo 2020 Main Press Centre to provide the media with life-like experience.

Athletes and 5G

The athletes can also gain new experiences from 5G as they train and compete. High-resolution videos, rich data and analytics come handy when analyzing their performance, as learning from these can effectively improve achievements.

Samsung has been providing for olympic competitors and – since 2018 paralympic as well – special edition smartphones to stay in touch with their loved ones during the Games.

This year it is not only blue but supports 5G as well.
